Aren’t you bored of doing nothing? What do you do all day? How do you cope with your current situation? – These are some of the questions people ask me on a daily basis. So with this ‘5 step tutorial-blogpost’, I will teach you ‘how to stay sane’ while being bored out of your brain.
Weekend! It’s Saturday morning, 07:13 AM, and I’m already wide awake. I often get asked questions like: ‘why are you already awake? You don’t have work, you have no schedule, why don’t you sleep in?’. The situation that I’m in with my back, keeps me from doing activities. I sit at home a lot, go for occasional walks and obviously don’t use much energy throughout the day. So basically, the fact that I barely do stuff is the reason that I sleep so little. With 5 hours of sleep, my body and mind can recover just enough for the day that lies ahead.
I live in Hilversum, a small city in the Netherlands. Close to my house there’s a moor, I used to go there with my grandma when I was young. And now I still go there from time to time. I go there on walks, to think, to ‘get some fresh air’, to enjoy nature and, of course, because my back needs a little bit of exercise. With my back injury I can barely do any sports. I can’t even go for a run, which I’d much rather do. So walking will have to do, for now.
I open the door and walk in to the house, it’s abandoned. Windows have been taken out and are replaced with planks. The lights don’t work anymore, but there’s candles all over the house. There’s blankets, pillows and mattresses on the floor in the living room. It seems people have camped here after the blast, trying to survive in our ‘new world’. But the house is empty, ‘no one home’. I’ve walked a great distance today, so I sit down on one of the mattresses to rest my feet. I take a bottle of water from my backpack and take one little sip, I have to save some for later.
It’s Saturday night and that means ‘fun time’ for a lot of people. People work hard all week long to spend their hard earned money in the pub or club. They post pictures of themselves with their friends on their social media accounts to show the world how amazing their life is. Life in the modern western world is great, right? No one has to worry about their safety and can do/say whatever he or she likes. Every one is used to the comfort our modern western world has to offer.
I haven’t been doing any writing the last couple of days, one of the reasons is that I don’t really know what to write about. I don’t do much on a daily basis, so I sometimes kinda run low on inspiration. And besides the lack of inspiration at the moment, the last 9 days, I’ve been playing this new video game called ‘Sea of Thieves’. A Pirate’s Life For Me.
Modern day technology has been completely embedded in to machines that we use on a daily basis. Everyone nowadays at least has a mobile phone, but there’s a lot more machines that are embed with our technology when you take a look around the house. Home computers, laptops, tablets, tv’s, dryers, washing machines, lights and even vacuum cleaners that vacuum clean the house by itself.
All hands on deck! Raise the anchor and lower the sails, we’re headed east! ‘I command, my crew executes’. In order to succeed, hierarchy is needed, even for free men like us. As we exit the harbor and head east towards open waters we can see the sun setting itself up for a beautiful sunrise, truly a wonderful sight. Nothing beats a clear blue sky and a rising sun on the horizon, never gets old.
As a kid I was not that good at making new friends and still aren’t the best. Never had a lot of friends and still don’t have a lot of them either. I can count my friends on one hand. Is this a bad thing? No, I don’t think so. It just means that the select group of people who I see as my friends are ‘loyal friends’. I don’t see them too often, but when we’re together it’s like we see each other every day.
